What are you shooting for?

If you are familiar with basketball or hockey, you may have heard someone yell “shoot your shot”. They’re trying to encourage the player to risk their possession of the ball or puck, to score and reach their goal, which is scoring. As much as I hate sport analogies when it comes to life, this is one I think we as believers need to hear, especially in our current climate.
I believe that life is beautiful, tragic, and paradoxical not only from my experience but from reading God’s word. So I know that when someone tells me to risk my comfortability and control to reach a goal, I hesitate. So much can go wrong. I could offend someone, be rejected, or risk my own well being if I do so. My anxiety goes up and thinks of every negative scenario possible and impossible. But every negative scenario and possibility is the cost to reaching the end goal. That’s what makes losing possession and control worthwhile, the goal.
I bring this analogy up as a challenge to all of us, what is your goal? What are you shooting for? Are you letting go of comfortability and control for things that are eternal and lasting? Are you risking your own life for things that are temporary and comfortable? Because the things that are eternal and true will always be worth the risk. Loving people, caring for the lost, and growing in a relationship w/ God are worth the risk. Loving people despite their political affiliation, religious background, or social status is what living an eternally minded life is like. Caring for widows, orphans, the homeless, and anyone who is in need is what shooting the tight shot looks like. Reading your Bible & believing it, worshipping, spending time in honest & intimate prayer, and choosing God over your own desires is what eternal life looks like in a temporary world!
If you feel like you’re not risking your safety, comfort, or control over your life on things that are eternal, you have hope. Go to God today, be honest and ask Him what He wants you to shoot for. He’ll be honest, merciful, and truthful to your situation. He isn’t cruel but He is righteous and will call you to live righteous if you aren’t living in righteousness. Don’t be afraid to shoot your shot for righteousness. It's the most rewarding thing you could ever risk your life for.
